From time-to-time, you probably share the results of your work in Excel with others. Printing an Excel file may be the last step you take prior to distributing your work. Knowing how to appropriately set up and print your files is, therefore, very important. You probably don't want to cause a bad impression simply because your file doesn't print properly. Correctly setting up and printing your Excel files takes some time.

The good news is that you can easily automate most of these activities using VBA. And if that's your purpose, then this VBA Tutorial is likely to be of help. My purpose with this blog post is to provide you with the most relevant information you need to appropriately set up your Excel files for printing and, as required, print or display a print preview. The first section of this Tutorial introduces and explains several VBA constructs that are commonly used when printing Excel files.

In the second section, I go through 2 detailed VBA code examples that you can easily adjust and start using today. Additionally, this VBA Tutorial is accompanied by an example workbook. It also has the data and worksheets that appear in the screenshots throughout this post.

You can get immediate free access to this example workbook by subscribing to the Power Spreadsheets Newsletter. Let's start by taking a very basic look at the process your VBA code usually follows when printing from Excel or displaying a print preview:. Generally, you can print or display a print preview with VBA in the following 2 easy steps :. This VBA Tutorial covers these 2 steps in detail. Let's start by looking at the VBA construct you use to print Excel worksheets, the….

The PrintOut method allows you to print the referenced object. However, you can't generally print hidden sheets. You can work with the PrintOut method at several different levels. In other words, you can refer to different objects. The object you refer to determines what Excel prints. The following are the most relevant:. Generally, the syntax and parameters are always the same. That is regardless of the object you're printing.

As shown above, PrintOut has the following 9 parameters. These arguments are optional. In some cases, the IgnorePrintAreas parameter isn't applicable. This is the case when you apply the PrintOut method to the Window Window.

PrintOutRange Range. PrintOut and Chart Chart. PrintOut objects. In such cases, the basic syntax looks roughly as follows:.In short, doesn't look like you can print to a printer at all with it. But, as some "brilliant" person said on a similar topic for Sublime, just copy it into an editor that can print and print from that! So are you suggesting that since the program is free we should all just hold hands and drink the kool-aid when it lacks features that even the most basic text editor on the planet should include?

I like VS Code. A lot. But the lack of a printing functionality is just bone headed and dumb. Since they seem to be following in the footsteps of Sublime and Atom on this I am going to assume that some hipster "modern" web developer made the assumption that since most people use electronic devices no one would ever actually want a hard copy.

I expect this from the Sublime and Atom crowd. I also expect the guys at Microsoft to be a little more old school and exercise some common sense. For those reading this that are fortunate enough to use VS Code on Linux, most Linux distros include the 'lpr' utility by default, which prints to the default system printer.

This should work fine from the embedded terminal in VS Code. Might even work on one of those cutesy coffee shop laptops. Not sure if the Jobsians stripped lpr out of OSX. When you have installed it you just have to type "PrintCode" in the command lane F1 and you will be able to print it out.

I agree. Did not work for me. Could it be the PrintCode boys getting revenge? The PrintCode extension mentioned in this thread works for me. It works best of your default browser is Chome I think.

It is not perfect, for example, it can only print in portrait mode. But it works well for me. Wow what a good idea! Copy somebody elses dumb idea. Reminds me of a movie line "Have IQ's dropped sharply I got fed up with the fact that VS Code doesn't support printing and wrote my own printing extension.

Microsoft would say not only is it open source it explicitly supports extensions, and if it actually matters and you aren't just bitching then there's nothing stopping you from addressing the problem yourself. And they'd be right, so I did, and as a result printing does all the things I care about, like line numbers and syntax colouring and the ability to double space for pencil annotation in a code review. Here it is. Given the way it works, it should be cross platform but I use Windows so I can't swear to that.

Try it out and let me know whether there are any issues on Linux. Create a text file and save it using the save dialog. Have notepad as part of the process so you can then print from notepad.

If you want rich text you must create a graphics document and print the graphics document. It is very complicated but I can provide the code if you wish for both methods. In this lesson, we shall learn some basic techniques in writing the Visual Basic program code.

First of all, we should understand that each control or object in VB are able to run numerous kinds of events. To start writing code for an event procedure, you need to double-click an object to enter the VB code window. For example, if you want to write code for the event of clicking a command button, you double-click the command button and enter the codes in the event procedure that appears in the code window, as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4. End Sub. The keyword Sub actually stands for a sub procedure that made up a part of all the procedures in a program or a module. The program code is made up of a number of VB statements that set certain properties or trigger some actions. For example, the statement Form1. Show means to show the form with the name Form1, Iabel1. This is a counter which start counting after the user click on a command button. In this program, we insert a label, two command buttons and a Timer control.

The label acts as a counter, one of the command buttons is to start the counter and the other one is to stop the counter. The Timer control is a control that is only used by the developer, it is invisible during runtime and it does not allow the user to interact with it.

The Timer's Interval property determine how frequent the timer changes. A value of 1 is 1 milliseconds which means a value of represents 1 second. In this example, we set the interval towhich represents 0. In addition, the Timer's Enabled property is set to false at design time as we do not want the program to start counting immediately, the program only start counting after the the user clicks on te "Start Counting" button.

You can also reset the counter using another command button. This program display a message whether the label is being click once or click twice.

Next, key in the following codes:. In Visual Basic, most of the syntaxes resemble the English language.
